Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

HOW CAN TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE HELP ME?

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are a whole-body approach to health. The root cause of a problem is treated, as well as symptoms.  It can

  • Promotion of health and well-being
  • Prevention of illness
  • Treatment of various disease conditions

Through the use of acupuncture needles (and the use of herbal medicines, if indicated) the body is influenced to return to its normal state of balance and good health.  Each patient receives a highly individualized and flexible treatment.

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE? WILL IT HURT?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical art that uses the insertion of flexible, delicate needles (usually thinner than a human hair) at specific points along the surface of the body in order to influence the flow of energy through the body along crucial internal pathways (meridians).  When the flow of energy throughout the body is smooth and unimpeded, the body functions optimally.  Sometimes a “twinge” may be felt with the insertion of a needle, but most people who “hate needles” will feel comfortable during a treatment.  Many patients find the treatment so relaxing that they fall asleep in the treatment room.

DO I HAVE TO BELIEVE IN ACUPUNCTURE FOR IT TO WORK?

No.  This system of medicine is based on more than twenty-three centuries of empirical evidence (clinical experience).  One quarter of the world’s population uses it as their primary health care system.  The United States’ government institution, the National Institute of Health (NIH) states, “the data in support of acupuncture are as strong as those for many accepted Western therapies.”

WHAT IS CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE?

Through centuries of clinical observation, the medicinal properties of thousands of herbs were discovered.  Herbs can be prepared as decoctions (teas), powders or tablets.  Determining which herbs will be beneficial to a patient is based on the patient’s constitution and his or her particular symptoms.  While very effective, people taking Chinese Herbal Medicine rarely experience negative side effects.

Good health is more than the absence of disease.  It is the presence of a sense of well-being and calm that results from a balanced complement of good nutrition, work, rest, play and relationships.
